Along with this move, the company introduced a dedicated app directory in the ChatGPT tool menu, facilitating the discovery and use of new integrations by users. The concept of apps in ChatGPT was first presented in October when OpenAI announced that it wanted to expand the functionalities available within a single conversation. Well-known platforms like Expedia, Spotify, Zillow, and Canva revealed early integrations, allowing users to search, design, or plan without leaving the chat interface. These apps are meant to extend conversations by adding real-world context and facilitating concrete actions, such as ordering food or managing daily tasks.
Developers can build these integrations using the OpenAI SDK for apps, which is currently in beta. Once the apps are ready, they can be submitted through the OpenAI developer platform, where creators can track the review and approval process. OpenAI stated that approved apps will start appearing in ChatGPT over the next year, signaling a major step towards building a complete ecosystem of apps around the chatbot.
