OpenAI: ChatGPT has been used in an influence operation attributed to China, aimed at affecting political debates in the USA

A report published by OpenAI shows that, between the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026, certain groups used ChatGPT to create slogans, caricatures, and critical materials regarding Donald Trump's trade and technology policies. Among the generated images are caricatures in which Trump symbolically destroys 'the global future'. The group also used the platform to produce comments in Chinese, Italian, and Japanese, distributed on social media.

OpenAI identified another operation associated with a Chinese technology company that attempted to influence the debate about the expansion of data centers necessary for the development of artificial intelligence, a sensitive topic in the U.S.

The Chinese Embassy rejected the accusations, stating that it opposes unfounded attacks. The report highlights the trend of using artificial intelligence in campaigns to influence public opinion, emphasizing the accessibility of generative technologies.

Ironically, note OpenAI representatives, some of the campaigns directed against the AI industry were produced using American artificial intelligence tools.
