Meta has announced a partnership with Overview Energy to power its data centers with solar energy collected from space, in an effort to meet the growing demand for electricity. The agreement provides for the supply of up to 1 gigawatt of energy, equivalent to the energy produced by a nuclear reactor. Overview Energy is developing the technology necessary to collect solar light via satellites and convert it into electricity, with an initial orbital demonstration planned for 2028. Commercial delivery of energy could begin in 2030. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by Meta to invest in artificial intelligence, allocating hundreds of billions of dollars for infrastructure and energy. Although Meta has previously used natural gas as its main energy source, it is now seeking cleaner and more sustainable solutions. Overview Energy aims to surpass the limitations of terrestrial solar panels by collecting energy from space, where the sun is constantly available.
