The educational platform Canvas, used by numerous American universities for communication between professors, students, and administrative staff, became inaccessible on Thursday following a cyberattack claimed by the hacker group ShinyHunters. Stanford, Berkeley, Penn State, and Columbia universities confirmed that members of the academic communities could no longer access the application, and users received messages indicating the service was blocked by hackers. The company Instructure, which owns the Canvas platform, announced that the incident was under control, but access to the service remained restricted. The ShinyHunters group threatened to publish the obtained data if the affected universities did not agree to negotiate a deal. Additionally, Stanford University was informed about the compromise of some personal data, including names and email addresses. In the context of the platform's blockage, the affected institutions are trying to find alternative solutions for accessing academic information. ShinyHunters is known for cyberattacks on major companies, including Ticketmaster and AT&T.
