Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope on Wednesday that the Democratic Party’s victory in the United States midterm elections would lead to increased support for Ukraine, which has been at war with Russia for more than four and a half years.
In an interview with German broadcaster ZDF, Zelensky said that Democrats taking control of both chambers of Congress could be favorable for Kyiv. The Ukrainian leader also thanked Republicans, but emphasized that Democrats had spoken more clearly in favor of providing military and financial assistance to Ukraine.
Zelensky said that the restoration of ties between the United States and Europe and the emergence of a new balance of power could prompt Congress to approve more substantial support. According to him, such a decision would have an impact on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Ukrainian president also spoke about Starlink and Starshield, the connectivity services of SpaceX, which are used, among other things, for drone operations and air defense. He thanked the company for its support, but expressed disagreement with Elon Musk’s positions on the war. Zelensky previously announced that the services had resumed operating at levels seen before the restrictions.
