A woman from Hessen, Germany, is facing a difficult financial situation, being required to repay nearly 60,000 euros, after having received for over 20 years both survivor's pension and her own old-age pension without reporting this.
The Social Court of the State of Hessen ruled that she violated the obligation to inform the authorities about financial changes. The woman, now 86 years old, began receiving the survivor's pension in 1996, and since 1999 she also started receiving her own pension, which led to an overpayment of 59,831 euros. The court concluded that the negligence was serious, considering that the woman had been warned to report any additional income. Although she claimed she acted in good faith, the court did not accept the request for partial debt forgiveness, stating that the statute of limitations had not been violated.
