The scandal of incorrectly recalculated pensions. Over 574,000 pensioners in Romania could face enforced execution due to calculation errors made by the Pension House

Former president of the National House of Public Pensions, Doina Pârcălabu, told Antena 3 CNN that all pension files must be rechecked following the Court of Accounts’ report on the 2024 recalculation. Some checks will have to be carried out manually, while pensioners who received amounts higher than those provided for by law could be required to repay them.

The Court of Accounts identified suspected errors in the case of more than 2.7 million pensions: 574,060 pensioners allegedly received higher scores, while 2,211,060 beneficiaries were flagged as having received lower scores than those to which they were entitled. In the case of overpaid amounts, recovery could be carried out through wage garnishment; however, the amount withheld cannot exceed one-third of monthly income.

The audit, conducted between August 18, 2025, and February 27, 2026, covered the year 2024. Inspectors estimated an overstatement of expenditure of more than 71 million lei and an understatement of more than 230 million lei. The problems were allegedly caused both by the IT system, which did not function properly, and by the manual entry of certain data from the files.
