In South Sudan, cholera-stricken children have died on their way to treatment clinics after cuts in US aid led to the closure of many health centers. With over 40,000 cases of cholera, half of them in children under 15, the situation is critical. The NGO Save the Children reported that five children and three adults died in Akobo county while trying to reach a clinic three hours away. The drastic reduction in aid has seriously affected the capacity to respond to the health crisis.
