The Ukrainian authorities decided on Tuesday to evacuate over 7,000 civilians from several localities in the Kharkiv region, located in the northeast of the country, at the border with Russia.

The regional governor, Oleg Sinegubov, announced on Telegram that this measure is a reaction to the deteriorating security situation and the systematic attacks by Russian troops. The evacuation affects several localities and includes over 1,700 children.

The evacuations are part of a set of protective measures adopted by Kyiv to reduce civilians' exposure to bombings and fighting, in the context of the Kharkiv region remaining one of the most affected by the Russian offensive in northeastern Ukraine.
