The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced on Monday the deployment of six F-16 fighter jets in the northern part of Cyprus, an area recognized only by Ankara, to enhance security.
This measure comes in response to recent developments in the region and is part of a broader security plan for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The deployment of the aircraft was anticipated, considering that a British airbase in Cyprus was attacked by an Iranian drone, and two other drones were intercepted.
The self-proclaimed republic declared independence in 1983, following the Turkish military intervention in 1974, and has since remained under the influence of Turkey, which has sent settlers to the area.
