Romania’s Ministry of National Defence detects an aerial target near the border / Two F-16 aircraft scrambled for monitoring

The radar surveillance system of the Ministry of National Defence detected, on Monday, September 21, an airborne target approximately 12 kilometers north of Chilia, near the border with Romania. No incursions into national airspace were reported.

To monitor the situation, two F-16 aircraft of the Romanian Air Force took off from Borcea 86th Air Base. The aircraft were on Air Policing combat duty and were dispatched after the target was identified by radar systems.

The National Military Command Center notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, and the authorities ordered an alert to be issued to the population in northern Tulcea County. At 05:30, residents in the area received a RO-ALERT message.

According to the Ministry of National Defence statement, the air alert remained in effect until 06:14, when it was lifted. The Ministry specifies that, throughout the incident, no entries by the target into Romanian airspace were reported.
