An American federal judge has set the trial date for the defamation lawsuit filed by Donald Trump against the BBC, scheduled for February 2027. The American president is seeking 10 billion dollars from the British broadcaster for a controversial video montage from a speech given on January 6, 2021, which was edited to suggest that Trump was inciting an attack on the Capitol. The complaint, filed in December, includes allegations of defamation and violation of the law regarding unfair trade practices.
BBC lawyers attempted to dismiss the complaint, but without success, and the BBC sent a letter of apology to Trump, acknowledging that the images were edited, but denying any legal basis for the complaint. The scandal led to the resignation of some top BBC officials. Trump has a history of lawsuits against the media, some of which have resulted in substantial settlements.
