Donald Trump held a rally Tuesday in Greenville, North Carolina, to support Republican Michael Whatley in the race for the U.S. Senate, ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. The contest is considered important for maintaining Republican control of Congress, but polls show Democrat Roy Cooper as the favorite.
Trump sought to mobilize voters, saying Whatley could achieve “amazing” results despite Cooper’s double-digit lead. The race has become difficult for Republicans after Senate Leadership Fund, the party’s main funding group for Senate elections, halted its spending in the state.
The U.S. president’s approval rating has fallen to 31%, the lowest level of his two terms in office, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. Dissatisfaction is being fueled by rising prices and the administration’s policy on the war in Iran. In early voting, Democrats have submitted twice as many ballots as Republicans.
Trump also sought to attract support through announcements of local investments, including $1.5 billion for chip production and a possible $5,000 payment to every American adult if Republicans retain control of Congress.
