American President Donald Trump threatened the BBC with legal action after it was discovered that the network edited a speech of his from January 6, 2021, making it seem like he was inciting violence. In reality, Trump called on supporters to protest peacefully. The editing led to the resignation of BBC CEO Deborah Turness and General Director Tim Davie. Trump stated on his platform Truth Social that the involved journalists are "corrupt" and that this incident is "a tragedy for democracy." The BBC acknowledged that the editing was a "judgment error" and apologized, emphasizing that it is not a biased news organization. Samir Shah, the president of the BBC, stated that it would have been better to take formal action in this case. The scandal was initially reported by The Telegraph, which published a leaked memo from an advisor to the BBC's editorial standards committee.
