The American President Donald Trump has decided to temporarily waive the Jones Act, a century-old maritime regulation, to help reduce energy costs amid rising tensions in the Middle East caused by American-Israeli attacks on Iran. The 60-day waiver will allow foreign-flagged vessels to transport goods between U.S. ports, thus lifting the prohibition imposed by the 1920 law, which has been criticized for hindering trade and increasing costs for consumers.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that this measure is intended to mitigate short-term disruptions in the oil market, while the U.S. military continues to fulfill the objectives of Operation Epic Fury, launched against Iran on February 28. Leavitt emphasized that this action will allow the free flow of vital resources, such as oil and natural gas, to U.S. ports.
