Trump asked Turkey, a NATO ally, to cease its purchases of Russian oil in order to lift the sanctions imposed in 2020, after Turkey purchased S-400 systems. These sanctions led to the blocking of Turkey's purchase of F-35 aircraft. In his speech at the UN, Trump also urged other European countries to abandon imports of gas and oil from Russia to pressure Putin to stop the war in Ukraine.
