In a speech about his tax cut bill, Donald Trump used the term "Shylock" to describe certain bankers, sparking backlash. The Anti-Defamation League has pointed out that the term evokes an old and dangerous anti-Semitic stereotype, calling Trump's use of it irresponsible. Although the criticism was strong, Trump said he was unaware of the connotations of the term and interpreted it only as a synonym for loan shark.
