Donald Trump was criticized after appearing Monday at an election rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, wearing a suit by the American brand Jos. A. Bank, whose products are largely manufactured in Asia. The label was photographed after the president opened his jacket at the end of the event organized to support Republican Senator Pete Ricketts.
The clothing choice appears to contradict the “America First” message and Trump’s policy of promoting domestic manufacturing and imposing tariffs to encourage companies to move their factories to the United States.
Menswear journalist Derek Guy claimed that Jos. A. Bank products are manufactured in countries such as China and Bangladesh. The suit appears to be part of the Traveler collection, made from a blend of wool, polyester and elastane and sold for approximately $280.
The exact country of manufacture has not been confirmed. The parent company, Tailored Brands, also has manufacturing operations in the United States, but documents filed with authorities show that it relies primarily on suppliers in Asia. Choosing an affordable suit could nevertheless be a way for Trump to appeal to voters affected by the rising cost of living.
