The United States government is considering establishing a presidential retreat at the Trump International golf complex in Palm Beach, Florida, for future presidents and to host important meetings. The proposal, confirmed to AFP by a White House official, nevertheless raises questions about potential financial benefits for Donald Trump’s family, which owns the complex.
The official, who requested anonymity, cited the property’s location near Donald J. Trump International Airport, the site’s security, the absence of high-rise buildings and the proximity of law enforcement. He did not specify whether the Trump family would be paid for the use of the complex or whether the U.S. government intended to purchase it.
The project is part of a practice that has already drawn criticism, with the president using his golf properties for meetings with foreign leaders. Trump recently hosted officials in Ireland and Scotland, while a G20 summit is scheduled for December at another of his properties in Miami. These events have fueled debate over the overlap between the presidency and his family’s private interests.
If approved, the initiative would replace, for certain meetings, the austere atmosphere of Camp David, the military base near Washington that has long been used for major diplomatic negotiations, including the 1978 Camp David Accords.
