President Donald Trump announced on Monday, at the White House, the construction of the largest steel mill in United States history, in Iowa. The project will be carried out by Mesabi Metallics, and the plant is expected to become operational in 2030. The exact construction site has not yet been determined.
The facility will have an annual capacity of at least 7.5 million tons of steel and will create approximately 1,750 permanent jobs. The iron ore needed for production will come from a new company mine in Minnesota, as part of an investment estimated at $2.5 billion.
The announcement is part of the Trump administration’s strategy to revive domestic production and reduce dependence on imports. Last year, the president raised tariffs on imported steel to 50%, a measure that also fueled the trade dispute with Canada.
A White House official said this would be the first large-scale American steel mill built since the 1960s. The administration estimates that production could also support defense projects. The announcement was made fewer than 40 days before the midterm elections, at a time when Iowa Republicans are trying to retain political control of the state.
