The administration of Donald Trump has challenged a court decision that suspends the construction of a $400 million ballroom at the White House, arguing that it poses security risks for the president and his family.
Attorneys for the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) filed a motion stating that halting the work threatens national security, considering that the ballroom would include bomb shelters and military installations. Judge Richard Leon temporarily suspended the project, concluding that the conservative group challenging the construction has a chance to win.
Although Trump criticized the decision, he mentioned that work on the underground bunkers and other security facilities around the White House grounds will continue.
NPS argues that the president has full authority for the renovation of the White House and that the current state of the construction site makes it more difficult to protect the building.
The administration has requested a swift decision from the appeals court, seeking to bring the case before the U.S. Supreme Court.
