The United States Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation against E. Jean Carroll, the former columnist who accused Donald Trump of sexual assault. The investigation focuses on the possible commission of perjury by Carroll in connection with two civil lawsuits: one for sexual assault and another for defamation.

Prosecutors are investigating a statement made by Carroll in 2022, in which she claimed that she did not receive external funding for the lawsuit, although it was later discovered that billionaire Reid Hoffman covered some legal expenses. Carroll's team declined to comment, and the Department of Justice confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. Additionally, Trump has appealed to the Supreme Court against rulings requiring him to pay millions in damages, and the decision regarding his appeal has been postponed several times.
