The Trump administration reinstated 13 statues in Freedom Plaza, Washington D.C., among which is an equestrian monument dedicated to Caesar Rodney, an important figure of the War of Independence, but also a slave owner. The statue was removed from Wilmington, Delaware, in June 2020, following Black Lives Matter protests. It illustrates Rodney's journey from 1776, when he voted for America's independence. Surrounding the statue are 12 soldiers symbolizing the diversity of those who fought in the war. A spokesperson for the Department of the Interior stated that these statues reflect the administration's commitment to recognizing the entire history of the nation. Trump criticized the removal of Rodney's statue, considering it an act of historical revisionism. The reinstatement of a statue of Christopher Columbus, destroyed in 2020, was also announced. These actions are part of Trump's efforts to influence the Smithsonian Institution and promote a vision of American history that does not fuel social divisions.
