U.S. President Donald Trump signed a text on Thursday designating the Oval Office as a “historic monument,” during an event held at the White House, shortly after Democrats took control of Congress following the midterm elections.
Trump argued that the measure would prevent the destruction or alteration of the space he considers one of the symbols of the U.S. presidential administration. “It will be impossible to erase, destroy, or touch it,” said the president, who explained that the protection would also apply to the Cabinet Room, located nearby.
The only direct reference to the shift in the balance of power in Congress was a red cap inscribed with the message “veto,” placed on the presidential desk. Trump did not hold a press conference about the elections, preferring to talk about the architecture of the White House and the need to preserve historic rooms.
The decision comes amid major transformations initiated by the president. One wing of the White House was demolished to make way for a ballroom, while the Rose Garden was partially paved over. Trump also added gilded decorations, numerous portraits, and a helicopter platform.
