Donald Trump declared on his social platform, Truth Social, that the Strait of Hormuz is U.S. territory, provoking international reactions. This strategic strait, essential for the transport of hydrocarbons, has been at the center of tensions between Iran and the United States.
The Iranian chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, announced that the strait will remain closed until Washington respects the commitments made in a memorandum of understanding from June, which includes lifting the naval blockade and unblocking Iranian assets. Following an American-Israeli attack on Iran, Tehran reacted by blocking the strait, which led to an increase in oil prices.
Although hostilities have diminished, diplomatic efforts have stagnated, and recent discussions between Iran and the U.S. have been described as constructive, but with little trust. Trump stated that he will be patient in negotiations, while Iran and Oman discuss the passage of ships through the strait, amid threats from the American president.
