On Tuesday, two trains heading towards the Machu Picchu citadel in Peru collided head-on, resulting in the death of the engineer of one of the trains and injuring at least 40 tourists. Authorities have not confirmed the nationality of the injured. Machu Picchu, included on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1983, attracts approximately 4,500 visitors daily, most of whom are foreign tourists. The accident occurred on the single-track railway line connecting the town of Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu at local time 13:20. The railway company Ferrocarril Transandino stated that trains operated by Inca Rail and PeruRail collided, causing human and material damage.
