The Japanese authorities reported the death of four workers, aged between 50 and 60, after they were struck by a train at Shin-Kanuma station, located north of Tokyo. The accident occurred on Thursday, around 10:46 local time, while the workers were spraying herbicide. Rail service on the Tobu Nikko line was suspended following the incident.
The police have launched an investigation to verify compliance with safety regulations. The victims were part of a team of ten people, which also included guards responsible for alerting workers about the arrival of trains. Although the surveillance system was functioning normally, officials did not provide clear details about the attention given to trains before the accident.
A passenger reported hearing a "strange noise" before the train came to an emergency stop. Fatal railway accidents are rare in Japan, making this incident all the more tragic.
