TikTok, with 170 million users in the European Union, is under investigation by the European Commission for using features that generate addiction, such as infinite scrolling and automatic notifications. According to research, these features can have a negative impact on mental health, especially for children and teenagers. The Commission emphasized that TikTok has not adequately assessed the risks associated with these features and has not implemented effective measures to mitigate them.

If the violation of the Digital Services Act is confirmed, TikTok could be fined up to 6% of its global revenue and could be required to change its design, including limiting infinite scrolling. Experts warn that addiction to social media is comparable to drug addiction, and TikTok is the most used platform by teenagers. In some European countries, children's access to social networks is restricted, but in Romania, there is still no legislation in this regard. TikTok representatives have not yet commented on the situation.
