Romania sent the European Commission confidential data as part of its investigation into TikTok’s role in the presidential election annulled at the end of 2024. The information was announced Thursday in Brussels by Thomas Regnier, a spokesperson for the European Commission.
“There is an investigation at the European Commission into the elections in Romania. We have received confidential data from Romania,” the European official told journalists.
The investigation is still ongoing and concerns the platform’s possible interference in Romania’s electoral process. According to Digi24 sources, the investigation could be completed at the end of this year or the beginning of 2027.
After the 2024 presidential election was annulled, Romanian authorities sent European officials declassified documents and other information relevant to the investigation. The European Commission is checking whether TikTok complied with its obligations under European digital services legislation.
If the platform is found responsible, it could face a fine of up to 6% of its turnover. Until the investigation is completed, the European Commission has not announced any conclusion regarding TikTok’s responsibility.
