The sanctions imposed by the U.S. against Brazilian judge de Moraes were lifted on Friday, amid a controversial legislative initiative to reduce the sentence of former president Jair Bolsonaro. This initiative gained legislative support in the lower house, but it must also be approved by senators before being signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro's rival. A senior official in the Trump administration stated that maintaining the sanctions would have been "inconsistent with U.S. foreign policy interests." Christopher Landau, Deputy Secretary of State, welcomed the initiative as a first step towards improving bilateral relations. Brazilian Minister of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffmann, considered the lifting of sanctions a victory for Brazil and for Lula. Judge de Moraes led the investigation into allegations of conspiracy against democracy, and relations between Trump and Lula seem to be improving after recent discussions on trade issues.
