On December 17, the Senate adopted, as the decision-making body, the Government's emergency ordinance regarding the European SAFE instrument, aimed at supporting EU member states in accelerating defense investments. The ordinance was voted with 79 votes in favor, one vote against, and 36 abstentions.
This regulatory act establishes the necessary framework for Romania to access European funds for modernizing the defense industry, reducing critical dependencies, and increasing interoperability.
PNL and USR senators emphasized the importance of the ordinance for integrating the Romanian industry into European production chains. In contrast, AUR senator criticized the ordinance, considering that it raises legal and administrative issues. PSD argued that the project is essential for national security, and senator Nadia Cosmina Cerva announced that her party will no longer vote for ordinances in the Senate, as a sign of protest. The ordinance is set to be promulgated.
