On January 22, 2026, officials from Nigeria and the USA participated in the inauguration of the USA-Nigeria Joint Task Force, aimed at strengthening cooperation in combating terrorism. Lieutenant General John Brennan, deputy commander of Africom, stated that the USA is increasing the delivery of equipment and information sharing with Nigeria, as part of a broader strategy to collaborate with African armies against militants linked to the Islamic State group. This cooperation has been driven by Washington's diplomatic pressure on Nigeria, following jihadist violence in the country.

Despite the desire for cooperation, diplomatic tensions persist, especially in the context of allegations of persecution of Christians in Nigeria, a controversial issue. At the meeting in Abuja, American officials emphasized the importance of protecting Christians, without mentioning the Muslim victims of armed groups. Brennan assured that American support will not be limited to the protection of Christians and that it will include information sharing to support Nigerian airstrikes against jihadist groups. He also mentioned that the USA continues to collaborate with governments in the Sahel, despite recent coups that have led to a reduction in security cooperation.
