The U.S. House of Representatives voted on Tuesday with an overwhelming majority to adopt a bill that provides for the permanent introduction of daylight saving time, effectively ending the practice of changing the clock twice a year, in place since the 1960s. The bill was approved with 308 votes in favor and 117 against and will now be sent to the Senate.

Supporters of the amendment argue that keeping daylight saving time year-round will reduce sleep disruptions and increase safety, providing more natural light in the evening and stimulating economic activity. Critics, including Senator Tom Cotton, warn that permanent daylight saving time could lead to late sunrises in the winter, affecting children going to school. The bill faces opposition from some groups, including those in aviation, who highlight potential disruptions.

In the past, daylight saving time was used to reduce energy consumption during wartime, but it was repealed due to unpopularity.
