The UN Security Council is preparing to vote on Tuesday on a significantly watered-down resolution regarding the security of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, amid international tensions and the risk of vetoes from Russia and China. The move comes just hours before the deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump to Iran.
Supported by Gulf countries, Bahrain initiated negotiations on a text that would have provided a clear mandate for the use of force in securing this essential maritime route, but the text was weakened due to objections from permanent members. The latest version of the resolution condemns Iranian attacks on vessels and encourages targeted states to coordinate efforts to ensure navigation security, including by escorting commercial ships.
The draft calls on Iran to cease attacks and threatens additional measures against those who undermine freedom of navigation. The vote is scheduled for 11:00 AM (15:00 GMT), coinciding with Trump's threat to destroy Iran if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened.
