The USA, South Korea, and Japan will participate in the annual military exercise Freedom Edge, from September 7 to 11, aimed at testing readiness against nuclear and missile threats from North Korea. The exercise will take place in international waters south and east of Jeju Island, according to an announcement made by South Korean authorities.
It focuses on air defense, submarine warfare, and cybersecurity, with the goal of preparing for potential ballistic missile strikes. Freedom Edge was initiated in 2024, following an agreement between the leaders of the three countries during a summit at Camp David.
PACOM spokesperson Chloe Morgan emphasized the importance of this exercise for strengthening common values and interoperability. The announcement comes after recent joint maneuvers between the American and South Korean armies, and in the context of President Trump's attempts to organize a new summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
