North Korea tested two types of strategic cruise missiles launched from submarines on Wednesday, with the projectiles fired in the direction of the Sea of Japan, according to the state-run KCNA news agency, cited by Agerpres. Pyongyang claims that the launches had “no negative impact on the security of neighboring countries.”
North Korean authorities said the tests were aimed at verifying the readiness of submarine combat systems. The announcement indicates the regime’s efforts to assess the operational capability of naval forces and strategic-range weapons.
The tests took place amid rising tensions between North Korea and South Korea. On September 21, the explosion of a landmine in the demilitarized zone under Seoul’s control injured three South Korean soldiers.
Wednesday’s launches are part of a broader series of North Korean tests. Pyongyang launched several ballistic missiles during October, with the most recent series taking place on Monday. Each test is closely monitored by South Korean authorities and regional allies, amid concerns about the development of North Korea’s military capabilities.
