North Korea launched an unidentified projectile into the Sea of Japan, in a new episode that heightens tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The South Korean military announced that the object was launched toward the “East Sea,” the name used by Seoul for the Sea of Japan.
Japan’s Ministry of Defense confirmed the incident and stated that the projectile appeared to have been a ballistic missile. No immediate information was provided about the type of weapon, trajectory, or any possible damage.
The launch comes after several incidents between the two Koreas. In September, three South Korean soldiers were injured by the explosion of North Korean mines in the Demilitarized Zone, with Seoul accusing Pyongyang of placing them on its territory. North Korea denied the accusation.
Last week, Pyongyang announced new firing units at the border and the resumption of propaganda broadcasts directed toward the South through loudspeakers. Seoul proposed military talks concerning the demarcation line.
