On Monday, Syrians celebrate a year since the removal of Bashar al-Assad, in the context of the country struggling to regain stability after years of war. Official celebrations are scheduled in Umayyad Square in Damascus and in other locations. Assad fled to Russia after rebels led by Ahmed al-Sharaa captured the capital. Although the Kurdish administration congratulated the Syrians, it banned gatherings for security reasons, citing the activities of terrorist groups.
Sharaa, a former Al-Qaeda commander, called for national unity, promising a just order, but violence continues to affect the population. Despite the challenges, Sharaa claims that Syria is experiencing its best times, with promises of reforms and upcoming elections, while humanitarian needs remain acute, with millions of people in need of assistance.
