The inauguration ceremony of Samia Suluhu Hassan as president of Tanzania has been moved to the State House, where public access will not be allowed, following violent protests and an internet shutdown that marked the recent elections. Although the Electoral Commission declared her the winner with 98% of the votes, the opposition, represented by the Chadema party, denounced the elections as a 'sham' and called for new elections.

Diplomatic sources reported hundreds of deaths in hospitals, and local police are said to be using the internet shutdown to hunt opposition leaders. In this context, schools and universities have remained closed, and public transport has been suspended. Chadema has requested the UN and ICC to conduct independent investigations into the alleged killings. Samia Suluhu Hassan, from the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, entered the elections without real competition, after the Chadema leader was imprisoned and another candidate was disqualified.
