Ana Brnabić, president of Serbia’s Parliament and a former prime minister, has taken over as acting president following the resignation of Aleksandar Vučić. She will serve until early presidential elections are held, which must take place by the end of the year.
Vučić resigned on Sunday after more than nine years as president in order to run for prime minister in parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25, 2026. He said he did not want to use the presidency to his own advantage during the campaign.
Brnabić is a political ally of Vučić. She became a minister in 2016, prime minister in 2017 and president of Parliament in 2024. By assuming the interim presidency, she becomes the only person in Serbia’s history to have held all three of the country’s highest offices.
Brnabić is openly lesbian and has been in a long-term relationship with Milica Đurđić, with whom she has a child. Before leaving office, Vučić granted dozens of pardons to opposition activists and people associated with the ruling party. Protesters rejected the clemency and called for the former president to be held accountable for the repression of demonstrations in 2024–2025.
