Tanzania and Angola have agreed to connect the Port of Benguela on the Atlantic coast with the Port of Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean through a trans-African railway network. The announcement was made Thursday by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan after a meeting with her Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço.

The project would link Angola’s Lobito Corridor to the Tazara railway, which connects the Port of Dar es Salaam with the Zambian city of Kapiri. The route would also pass through the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia, creating a railway link between two oceans.

The Lobito Corridor, funded by the United States and the European Union, is primarily intended to facilitate access to the Atlantic Ocean for mining operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. The China-funded Tazara railway, meanwhile, stretches for approximately 1,860 kilometres.

Samia Suluhu Hassan said the link would boost bilateral trade, improve regional transport and facilitate the movement of goods. Tanzania’s president did not specify when construction could begin or when the connection would become operational.
