Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania and Greece signed an initiative in Zagreb on Friday to develop an Adriatic-Ionian railway corridor aimed at strengthening transport links in southeastern Europe.
For Croatia, the route would connect major cities and ports on the Adriatic Sea, including Rijeka, Zadar, Šibenik, Split and Ploče, and provide better links with the European railway network. The project could support passenger and freight transport, particularly by increasing the role of Croatian ports in regional logistics.
The initiative seeks to stimulate joint investment and include the future corridor in European transport development plans. The route would connect European Union member states with candidate countries and could contribute to regional development, port competitiveness and tourism along the eastern Adriatic coast.
However, the project is still at an early stage. There is not yet a complete railway line, and creating the corridor will require studies, planning, funding and decisions on whether to modernize certain sections or build new ones.
