The European Parliament has adopted a new regulation regarding the safety of toys, expanding the list of prohibited substances to enhance the protection of children's health. These measures are essential for products intended for children, regardless of whether they are manufactured in the EU or imported. MEP Marion Walsmann emphasized the importance of these rules, which provide clear guidelines and modern safety requirements. In 2023, the EU imported toys worth 6.5 billion euros, mostly from China, and toys were among the most reported consumer products in the EU's rapid alert system.
The new rules prohibit carcinogenic, mutagenic, and toxic substances for reproduction, extending the ban to harmful chemical substances, including endocrine disruptors and PFAS. Additionally, allergenic fragrances will be banned in toys for children under 3 years old. Manufacturers will need to assess all potential risks of toys, including chemical, physical, and electrical risks, and test for flammability and hygiene. The regulation provides a four-and-a-half-year transition period for implementation, being considered a victory for consumers, manufacturers, and the future of children.
