Christophe Hansen stated that no decision has been made regarding the provisional application of the trade agreement between the EU and the South American bloc Mercosur, awaiting the ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) on its compatibility with community legislation.
Hansen made these statements during a discussion with a committee of the Irish parliament, which, along with other countries such as France and Poland, opposed the agreement, considering it a threat to local agriculture. The European Parliament voted to refer the matter to the CJEU, which could delay the ratification of the agreement by up to two years.
Although the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, stated that provisional application is legal, Hansen emphasized that no decision has yet been made. The agreement, voted on in December, would allow easier access for South American agricultural products to the EU market, which could disadvantage European farmers.
