A section of the recently inaugurated Hongqi bridge in Sichuan province collapsed on Tuesday on a national highway that connects central China to Tibet. Local authorities closed the 758-meter bridge to traffic as early as Monday after cracks and ground shifts were reported nearby.
Conditions worsened on Tuesday, causing landslides that led to the collapse of the bridge and the roadway. Although the construction of the bridge was completed earlier this year, the incident raised concerns about construction standards, especially in the western regions of China, where transport projects are often affected by unstable terrain. Although there is no evidence of construction defects, the collapse comes after another major accident in August when a railway bridge under construction collapsed, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 workers.
