The British government is considering doubling the tariffs applied to steel imports, as part of a broader strategy to support the struggling steel industry. According to sources, a significant reduction in import quotas for certain steel products is expected, along with an increase in tariffs for quantities that exceed these limits by up to 50%. This measure would align the UK with policies already adopted by the European Union and the United States. A government spokesperson mentioned that a national strategy for the steel industry will be published soon, highlighting the executive's commitment to a sustainable future for the sector. The British steel industry, which supports approximately 37,000 jobs and represents 0.1% of the economy, is facing major challenges due to high energy costs and competition from cheaper imports, especially from China. These difficulties have led to financial problems for major producers such as Tata Steel and British Steel.
