Tesco sells its operations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia to Ahold Delhaize, the owner of Mega Image and Profi, for 1.7 billion euros

Tesco, the United Kingdom’s largest supermarket chain, is selling its operations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia to Dutch group Ahold Delhaize in a transaction valued at €1.7 billion. The agreement includes all Tesco stores, offices and distribution centers in the two countries.

The British company estimates that it will receive approximately €1.2 billion net and intends to return most of the amount to shareholders through an additional share buyback program after the transaction is completed.

In Romania, Ahold Delhaize operates the Mega Image and Profi chains. The group completed its acquisition of Profi in January 2025 for approximately €1.3 billion and has nearly 1,000 Mega Image stores, while Profi operates approximately 1,700 locations.

The sale comes after Tesco assessed, together with Goldman Sachs and Citi, a partial withdrawal from Central and Eastern Europe. Its operations in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary comprise 561 stores and more than 22,000 employees. The European division reported revenue of £4.5 billion last year.
