Romania is a challenging market for Greek retailer Jumbo, which reported stagnant sales in August and a decline of approximately 5% in the first eight months of the year, according to company data analyzed by Economica.
Jumbo’s 20 stores in Romania and its online platform generated sales in August similar to those recorded during the same period in 2025. Romania was thus the only country in the group where sales did not increase.
Between January and August, the retailer’s results were affected mainly by the increase in the VAT rate from 19% to 21%, introduced starting in August last year. The company said it absorbed the additional cost and did not pass it on to retail prices, but the measure did not prevent sales from declining.
The weak short-term performance comes amid an ambitious investment plan in Romania. Jumbo is therefore maintaining its development strategy in the local market despite fiscal pressures and difficult consumer trends.
