The Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced that Sweden will deploy JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets as part of the NATO Arctic Sentry mission, which aims to strengthen security around Iceland and Greenland. This initiative aims to deter threats and protect the common interests of allies, contributing to the stability of a region essential for Europe and transatlantic cooperation.
Sweden's participation will be gradual, and the decision comes against a backdrop of international tensions, including the expressed desire of U.S. President Donald Trump to purchase Greenland.
The Arctic Sentry mission, officially launched by NATO, serves to reaffirm the sovereignty of allies and maintain stability in the region.
This is the first major mission in which Sweden participates as a full member of NATO, following its accession in March 2024. Alongside Sweden, Germany and the United Kingdom are contributing to the mission with additional aircraft and troops.
