Sweden will reintroduce border controls starting on November 12, 2026, for a period of six months, until May 11, 2027, amid an assessment that there is a serious threat to public order and internal security. The decision was announced by the Swedish government on Thursday.
Authorities in Stockholm say the measure is justified primarily by the deterioration of the security situation following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The Swedish government says this context has led to the emergence of hybrid threats and the presence or activities of hostile actors within the Schengen area.
The controls will be introduced under European rules allowing member states to carry out temporary checks at their borders when they consider that there are serious risks to internal security or public order. The measure will initially cover six months, and its implementation will be monitored by the Swedish authorities.
The reintroduction of the controls comes amid growing European concerns about the war in Ukraine, hybrid attacks, and the activities of groups or actors considered hostile. Sweden, a member of the Schengen area, is thus maintaining temporary border checks as a preventive and security measure.
